What Can We Expect From a Covid-19 Vaccine?
It can be understood that the majority of the globe is waiting with bated breath for news updates on any little advancements that may have been achieved in the development of a vaccine for Covid-19. Across 240 possible vaccinations are now being developed in different locations around the world, including forty in clinical trials and nine in the final phases of testing. A process that ordinarily takes several years seems to have been reduced to a scramble over a matter of months.
The holy grail in the battle against Covid is unquestionably a vaccine, which is sought after by governments and their scientific advisers who all exude the worn-out atmosphere of people who have run out of ideas. Every new limitation is always introduced with the phrase "until we get a vaccination." Naturally, new vaccinations are not always effective, so it is important to sound the customary warning. But if at least one does, what can we hope for from it?
Are our expectations for a vaccination unreasonable?
There is a common misconception that vaccination is the magic bullet that would eventually eradicate the pervasive SARS-CoV-2. But, at least in the beginning, might it be that we have high expectations?
A notion known as "sterilizing immunity" in medicine states that a person who has received a vaccination may anticipate complete protection against a virus. However, coronaviruses don't often cooperate in this way. It is far more probable that vaccination will have the effectiveness of, say, 50%, in which case the vaccine will be a significant improvement but won't completely eradicate the virus, at least not right away.
The Covid-19 vaccination research being worked on by Oxford University and AstraZeneca may be the most advanced one at the moment. In this project's experiments on macaques, it was discovered that the vaccination prevented the monkeys from getting pneumonia, but that some viruses still lingered in the upper airways.
Candidate vaccines might alter the game.
The candidate vaccines, if they are successful even to some extent, promise to be a game-changer despite their probably subpar performance. This is because they both reduce the likelihood that the recipient will contract an infection and, if it does, they also significantly lessen the severity of the condition that will eventually arise. Therefore, it offers advantages on two fronts.
The study's principal investigator, Vincent Munster, director of the virus ecology division at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said: "If we push the disease from pneumonia to a common cold, then I think that's a huge step forward."
Ending the need for restrictions to be put in place to protect health services will allow for a return to normal life and a revitalized economy. This will be made possible by downgrading Covid-19 to an unthreatened condition.
